The Huntington Beach Academy for the Performing Arts? Music Media Entertainment and Technology program delves into popular music which highlights the importance of the keyboardist and how the instrument has evolved over time in their twelfth annual Retrofest. When most of us think of Rock music, the iconic image of the electric guitar springs to mind. During the infancy of Rock & Roll however, piano players like Fats Domino, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis brought Keyboard to the forefront as a lead instrument on par with guitar. The 60's deeply embedded the organ sound into the pop landscape and the 70's brought the synthesizer, which by the 80's threatened to replace the guitar as the coolest instrument to play. Join MMET as they explore the role of the keyboard and the keyboardist in popular music and celebrate all the great songs and artists that made keyboard their focus.
